Single-Zone vs. Multi-Zone: Which Do You Need?

A single-zone mini split is one outdoor unit paired with one indoor air handler. It's the simplest and cheapest option — ideal for a garage, a room addition, a sunroom, or a bedroom that the central AC doesn't reach well. Most single-zone systems run from 9,000 to 36,000 BTU and are available from brands like Mitsubishi, Daikin, LG, and Fujitsu for $800–$2,500 before installation.

A multi-zone system connects one outdoor unit to two to five indoor heads, each in a different room. The total BTU capacity of the outdoor unit should be at least 80% of the sum of all indoor units.
