Who's Behind HVACToolSuite

A set of free, no-login HVAC sizing calculators — built to run the same load-calculation logic a contractor's estimating software uses, without a lead-gen form standing between you and the number.

I built the first version of this site after getting three wildly different BTU numbers from three contractor quotes for the same room addition — no two used the same method, and none of them showed their work. HVACToolSuite is the tool I wanted at the time: enter your numbers, see the math, get a size range you can actually bring to a contractor conversation.

I'm not a licensed HVAC engineer, and none of these calculators replace a real Manual J load calculation performed by a licensed contractor — especially for permits, new construction, or anything code-mandated. What I do is research each topic against published ACCA and ASHRAE methodology, build a calculator around that math, and keep it updated as I learn where the simplified version breaks down.

Why This Site Exists

Most free HVAC calculators online do one of two things: they oversimplify sizing into a single "BTU per square foot" number that ignores insulation, windows, and climate — or they bury the real calculator behind a "get a free quote" lead form aimed at selling your contact info to installers. HVACToolSuite is built to do neither. Every calculator on this site runs in your browser, shows the inputs that actually move the number, and doesn't ask for your email to see a result.

How the Calculators Are Built

Each tool is built around published industry methodology rather than a made-up rule of thumb. Sources referenced across the site include:

ACCA Manual J — the residential load calculation standard used by contractors for proper equipment sizing
ASHRAE 62.2 — residential ventilation and indoor air quality requirements
ASHRAE 55 — thermal comfort standards used in the psychrometric calculator
DOE / IECC climate zone maps — regional design temperature data used throughout the sizing tools

These are simplified, educational implementations of that methodology — not certified Manual J software. For permit applications, new construction, or any project where a code official requires a stamped calculation, you'll need a licensed contractor or engineer to run the full version.

In short: use these tools to understand your numbers and walk into contractor conversations informed. Use a licensed professional for anything that needs to be certified, permitted, or guaranteed.
