How Heat Pump Sizing Differs From Standard AC Sizing
A standard central AC is sized to the cooling load only. A heat pump does both jobs — it cools in summer and heats in winter by reversing the refrigeration cycle. This creates a sizing dilemma: do you size to the cooling load or the heating load?
In warm climates (Zones 1–3), the answer is simple: size to the cooling load. The cooling demand is always larger, and the heat pump's heating output will comfortably cover the relatively mild heating season. In these climates, a correctly sized heat pump for cooling will be slightly undersized for the coldest days — but a small backup electric strip heater covers the gap.
In colder climates (Zones 5–6), the heating load takes over. Your coldest winter day might create a heating demand 1.5–2× your peak summer cooling demand. Here you have two options: size to the heating load (which means a slightly oversized cooling unit that may short-cycle in summer), or size to the cooling load and add a gas furnace backup (called a dual-fuel system). Most HVAC engineers in cold climates recommend dual-fuel for Zone 5 and colder.

Cold-Climate Heat Pumps: A Special Case
Standard heat pumps lose heating efficiency rapidly below 35°F. By the time it's 17°F outside, a standard heat pump is delivering perhaps 50–60% of its rated heating capacity. That's a problem in Zone 5–6 winters.
Cold-climate heat pumps (Mitsubishi's Hyper-Heat, Daikin's Aurora line, Bosch IDS) maintain much higher capacity at low temperatures — some rated down to -13°F. If you're in a cold climate, always check the manufacturer's low-temperature capacity tables, not just the rated BTU at 47°F (the standard test condition). The 47°F rating can be 30–50% higher than what the unit actually delivers on a 5°F January night.
