How many BTUs do I need for a 500 sq ft room?
A 500 sq ft room in a moderate climate (Zone 4) typically needs 10,000–12,000 BTU/hr. Add 10% for sunny south-facing rooms, or subtract 10% for well-shaded rooms. Add 600 BTU per extra occupant beyond two.
How many BTUs do I need for a 1,000 sq ft space?
A 1,000 sq ft space needs approximately 18,000–22,000 BTU/hr (1.5–2 ton) in a moderate climate. Adjust upward by 10–20% for hot climates or poor insulation, and downward for excellent insulation or mild climates.
Is it better to oversize or undersize an AC unit?
Neither is ideal. An oversized AC cools too fast without dehumidifying properly, leaving the space clammy and uncomfortable. An undersized unit runs constantly and can't reach setpoint on hot days. Proper sizing is always best — use our full load calculator for a whole-home system.
Does ceiling height affect how many BTUs I need?
Yes — these charts assume 8–9 ft ceilings. For every foot above 9 ft, add approximately 4.5% to your BTU requirement. A room with 12 ft ceilings needs roughly 15% more capacity than the same footprint with 9 ft ceilings.
How many BTUs per square foot for a whole house?
Whole-house HVAC sizing runs 20–25 BTU per sq ft in moderate climates (Zone 4). Zone 3 (warm) may need 25–30 BTU/sq ft; Zone 5 (hot-humid) may need 30–35 BTU/sq ft. Always account for insulation, window count, and local design temperatures.
